The prefix (diplo-) means double, twice as many or twice as much. It is derived from the Greek diploos meaning double. Words Beginning With: (Diplo-) Diplobacilli (diplo-bacilli): This is the name given to rod-shaped bacteria that remain in pairs following cell division. They divide by binary fission and are joined end to end. Diplobacteria (diplo-bacteria): Diplobacteria is the general term for bacteria cells that are joined in pairs. Diplocephalus (diplo-cephalus): Diplocephalus is a condition in which a fetus or conjoined twins develop two heads. Diplochory (diplo-chory): Diplochory is a method by which plants disperse seeds. This method involves two or more distinct mechanisms. Diplococcemia (diplo-cocc-emia): This condition is characterized by the presence of diplococci bacteria in the blood. Diplococci (diplo-cocci): Spherical or oval-shaped bacteria that remain in pairs following cell division are called diplococci cells. Diplocoria (diplo-coria): Diplocoria is a condition that is characterized by the occurrence of two pupils in one iris. It may result from eye injury, surgery, or it may be congenital. Diploe (diploe): Diploe is the layer of spongy bone between the inner and outer bone layers of the skull. Diploid (diplo-id): A cell that contains two sets of chromosomes is a diploid cell. In humans, somatic or body cells are diploid. Sex cells are haploid and contain one set of chromosomes. Diplogenic (diplo-genic): This term means producing two substances or having the nature of two bodies. Diplogenesis (diplo-genesis): The double formation of a substance, as seen in a double fetus or a fetus with double parts, is known as diplogenesis. Diplograph (diplo-graph): A diplograph is an instrument that can produce double writing, such as embossed writing and normal writing at the same time. Diplohaplont (diplo-haplont): A diplohaplont is an organism, such as algae, with a life cycle that alternates between fully developed haploid and diploid forms. Diplokaryon (diplo-karyon): This term refers to a cell nucleus with double the diploid number of chromosomes. This nucleus is polyploid meaning that it contains more than two sets of homologous chromosomes. Diplont (diplo-nt): A diplont organism has two sets of chromosomes in its somatic cells. Its gametes have a single set of chromosomes and are haploid. Diplopia (diplo-pia): This condition, also known as double vision, is characterized by seeing a single object as two images. Diplopia can occur in one eye or both eyes. Diplosome (diplo-some): A diplosome is a pair of centrioles, in eukaryotic cell division, that aids in spindle apparatus formation and organization in mitosis and meiosis. Societal Lessons in Julius Caesar Essay Many authors try to convey different lessons that we, as individuals or a society can learn from their writings. William Shakespeare, in his play Julius Caesar, has definitely accomplished this goal. With the many lessons included in this story, society can learn from the mistakes of others made previously. It could be said that the actions of society are learned by the actions of our predecessors. In this incredible play, the major messages or societal lessons include mob mentality, respect, and wealth and power are the roots of all evil. Shakespeare realized that people behave differently in mobs. One individual can sway the opinions of everyone present by convincing just one person in the group. This is called mob mentality. In Act III, Scene II, Brutus speaks to the masses and explains why Caesar had to be slain for the good of Rome. Then, Brutus leaves and Antony speaks to the citizens. A far better judge of human nature than Brutus, Antony cleverly manages to turn the crowd against the conspirators by telling them of Caesars good works and his concern for the people. Another hideous act of the mob was the killing of Cinna the poet. They realize that he is the wrong Cinna, but they are so enraged, they slay him anyway. Although revenge is a major concept in this play, respect is another important theme. After Brutus kills himself, Antony says This was the noblest Roman of them all: all the conspirators save only he did what they did in envy of great Caesar; he only in a general honest thought and common good to all, made one of them. This quote means that Antony regarded Brutus as an honorable man, despite the fact that he killed Caesar. Antony also understood that Brutus killed Caesar for the good of Rome and not because of jealousy or hatred. Octavious then comments . with all respect and rites of burial. Within my tent his bones to-night shall lie, most like a soldier, orderd honourably. The men wish for his body to lie in their tent for the night, and then they will give him proper burial rites. One last lesson in this tragedy is wealth and powers are the roots of all evil. This statement applies mainly to Caesar himself, but can also be stretched to custom fit the conspirators. Caesar is a high and mighty man who appeals to all the common people of Rome, but Brutus and his men feel that his power has become too great. This fact is what motivates the conspirators to kill Caesar. Also, instead of looking at Caesar as the evil, the conspirators could be the driving forces. They begin to think they are more powerful than everyone else is, which results in the death of Caesar. Societal lessons are present throughout Shakespeares many works. Shakespeare observed how human nature could affect the decisions of other people, such as with Antony and the crowd of hostile plebeians. History tends to repeat itself, and many people who would make the same mistakes as the characters in Julius Caesar can learn from these important lessons. The tragedy of Julius Caesar was definitely an excellent topic for a play due to many lessons that we as a society can learn from it.

Whats Eating Gilbert Grape What's Eating Gilbert Grape portrays a family that is dealing with the trials, tribulations, and also great times of having a member with a disability. The Grape family consists of Gilbert, Ellen, Amy, Mama, and of course, Arnie. The Grape family lives in an isolated town of Endora in a house that seems to be in shambles since their father died. In the beginning, Gilbert's voiceover states that ?living in Endora is like dancing to no music,? which one can definitely relate to after viewing this touching film. Gilbert Grape is a young man that has been impeded by more burdens than any man ought to have in an entire lifetime. He stocks shelves and delivers groceries for a local store, Lamson's Grocery, whose business has been deserted by the new supermarket in town. The movie begins with the ?yearly ritual? of Gilbert and Arnie watching the caravans that pass along the road. Gilbert's adversity seems to have started when his father hung himself seventeen years ago in their basement, which in turn drove his mother to obesity and a life confined to only their home. His mother has become a ?burden? on him and he feels ashamed and humiliated by her. Gilbert even regards to his mother as ?a beached whale,? and at one point lifts a young boy to the window to experience the sight of her. Gilbert's mother is not his only complication; he is having an aimless affair with a frustrated housewife, Betty Carver, whose rash sexual demands have placed much apprehension on him. Gilbert's brother Arnie, who is mentally challenged, needs constant supervision, which places many ongoing responsibilities on Gilbert, as well. His oldest sister, Amy, is a very caring woman that tries to take on many responsibilities herself and the youngest sister Ellen, who is only fifteen, has many issues with her family that she is trying to overcome, as well. Becky, a young girl that traveled into town with her grandmother and their caravan found romance with Gilbert and a certain connection with Arnie accordingly. Arnie is not your average boy; he is mentally challenged and was not expected to live to see his tenth birthday, let alone, his eighteenth, which he surpasses in the movie. Arnie is associated with many heights in the movie as he is regularly seen dangling from the roof, climbing trees, and of course, his ritual of scaling the water tower. Although Arnie loves the heights, he can not seem to conquer the depths as he will not venture to the basement of the house. ?I don't want to go down there, Gilbert; Dad's down there,? thus voicing the repressed fear that no one in the family will, or can put into words. Arnie's water tower escapades are a source of great aggravation to the police, yet are greeted by the locals with an understanding of occasion and courteous applause when his feet are firmly planted back on the ground. Arnie obtains a fear of water when Gilbert abandons him in the bathtub for the night, and does not over come his apprehension until he flees to Becky after a fight he had with Gilbert. Forms of government and religion developed and due to this fact the people soon began to build cities and to manufacture things. Eventually they even began to trade with their neighbors. That is how it all started. This was the founding ground for both of their societies. To be a successful society the people needed a food supply, which meant that they had to have trust and faith in their farming techniques and in the supernatural gods that controlled their fate. Today, as then, every society has a god or idol they worship to explain why life takes the path that it does. Both the Mayan and Egyptians had a very strong religion centered society. Structures That Influence A Childs Development Education Essay In this paper I will be discussing the bioecological model of human development. In the bioecological model, development is defined as the phenomenon of continuity and change in biophysical characteristics of human beings(Bronfenbrenner Morris, 2007, p. 793). The main focus of the paper will be on Urie Bronfenbrenners bioecological theory of human development. This model provides the whole picture of the developing child, encompassing relevant theories within it(Berns, 2013, p. 16). Bronfenbrenner looks beyond general developmental patterns; he proposes that researchers examine various ecological settings in which the child participates, such as family and child care, to explain individual differences in childrens development (in this case, cognitive development)(Berns, 2013, p. 17). The social interactions of a child will determine how that child will grow and what type of adult that child will become. The type of environment a child is brought up in impacts the childs ability to l earn. It effects how they develop intellectually, cognitively, and emotionally. This is also when a child learns his morals and values. Bronfenbrenners bioecological model of human development has four basic structures. They are the microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, and macrosystem. This paper will show how the four structures of human development influence a childs development. The first system that influences development is the microsystem. It refers to the activities and relationships with significant others experienced by a developing person in a particular small setting such as family, school, peer group, or community (Berns, 2013, p. 18). This systems communications are in a close setting of their direct environment and would be considered the most important system of the developing human. The microsystem is the most influential THE FOUR BASIC STRUCTURES system. This is because it is the first time a child interacts with family, schools, and neighborhoods(Swick Williams, 2006, p. 374). This interaction occurs for a long period of time. The most significant relationship of the microsystem is family. Once a child is born they spend most of their time with their family. Their family is responsible for giving them a place to live, feeding them, clothing, keeping them warm, changing their diapers, and buying them anything that is needed. When children are still babies the family basically does everything for them. The family provides a child with the essentials child to live but that is not the only important role of a family. How parents teach their children, interact with them, and talk to them is the probably more important. This is what helps a child develop in the world. There are several different types of parenting styles. The type of parenting style can determine how a child will eventually end up as an adult. Parenting can affect the way a child does in school. It can also affect a childs mental state. Certain parenting styles can lead children into a life of depression others can lead children into a life of achieving. There are four different parenting styles. They are authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and non-involved. Authoritarian parenting is a style of parent-centered parenting characterized by unquestioning obedience to authority is strict and demanding (Berns, 2013, p. 62). These types of parents expect a lot from their children. This can lead to children having low self-esteem or being depressed. However the children are usually obedient. Perhaps the complete opposite of an authoritarian parenting style would be a permissive parenting style. Permissive parenting is THE FOUR BASIC STRUCTURES a style of child-centered parenting characterized by a lack of directives or authority(Berns, 2013, p. 62). These types of parents do not ask a lot of their children. They usually act more like a friend than a parent. This parenting style can lead to children that do not do well at school and they may suffer from depression as well. These children might also end up having problems with authority. Their parents never told them what to do so when an adult does show some authority the child acts out because they do not know how to handle it. Some may say the healthiest parenting style is authoritative. Authoritative parents are more democratic. They have rules that they expect their child to follow but if their child breaks these rules they are nurturing rather than punishing. Authoritative parenting style leads to a child being happy, assertive, and successful. The last parenting style is uninvolved. These parents are not involved with their child at all. They may provide their child w ith the basic needs necessary to survive but the might not even do that much. Children of uninvolved parents lack self-esteem, they do not do well in school, and they may act out in school. Parenting styles have a significant impact on development. The family structure also impacts development. The nuclear family consists of a husband, a wife, and their children. The nuclear family used to be the most popular but in todays society not all households are structured this way. Today it almost seems that divorce is the norm rather than the nuclear family. 30% of first marriages end in divorce(Kallaman, 2012, p.1). Almost everybody knows someone that is divorced. Even though divorce is becoming more of a normal experience that does not make it any easier on children of divorced parents. In a divorce the children may have to take increased THE FOUR BASIC STRUCTURES responsibility for themselves and may have less time available to spend with parents to receive love and security (Berns, 2013, p.82). Counseling, mediation, custody battles, and fighting are situations that a child might have to face when their parents are going through a divorce. In many occasions there is also a financial consequence. Usually the mother receives custody of the children and the mothers usually make substantially less than their husband. So the type of comfort the children were used to will most likely change. Peers, community, and schools also have an emotional impact on children. Children can have positive experiences with peer groups but they can also have negative experiences. When it is a positive experience peer groups can offer children independence and help them to find their sense of self. When it is a negative experience children can lose their ability to communicate and socialize with peers. It can also cause them to have low self-esteem. An example of a negative experience with peers is bullying. School is a tremendously beneficial experience for children. School is where children learn most of the skills they will need to be a productive adult. School also teaches children how they are expected to behave. The values of the school or teachers are passed on to their students. Children learn in different ways. They may be visual, spatial, auditory, or kinesthetic learners. It is the teacher and the schools responsibility to discover which type of learning best fits each child. The second system that influences development is the mesosystem. Mesosystems consists of linkages and interrelationships between two or more of a developing persons microsystems, such as the family and the school, or the family and the peer group (Berns, 2013, THE FOUR BASIC STRUCTURES p.20). These interrelationships involve a variety of settings that the child is immersed in; the influences bind them together (Bronfenbrenner Morris, 2007, p. 820). Mesosystems can benefit a childs development but that depends on the type of microsystems that come together and the quality of their relationships (Berns, 2013). One of the most important examples of a mesosystem involves schooling. Family and schools link together for the development of children. Children develop better when they have parents that are extremely involved in their education. These children will get higher grades, they will do better in school in general, and they will be more likely to attend college after high school. Families that are involved with school will attend family teacher conferences and they will participate in schools activities. Some parents may even volunteer at their childs school. It is also important for families to ask their children how school was and to help them with their homewor k. This will have a positive effect on children and the children will gain confidence (Berns, 2013, p. 142). The link between school and community is also a vital connection in a childs life. Schools that are located in richer in communities are better funded. The community supports the schools in their neighborhoods because these are the schools their children attend. They receive better books, computers, more funds for sports teams, more money for field trips, and better resources in general. The more funds a school has the more the learning process can be extended Children that attend these schools are in a better environment for learning and it gives them a positive outlook on life. These children have a better chance of doing well in school and doing well as adults. THE FOUR BASIC STRUCTURES The exosystem is the third system of Bronfenbrenners theory of human development. They are settings in which children do not actually participate, but which affect them in one of their microsystems(Berns, 2013, p. 21). Parents socioeconomic status is an example of this. Children dont participate in a familys socioeconomic status but it does affect them. If they are in a family that is in the low economic status they will not have the means to purchase items a child may need. This could be food or school supplies. They will not live in a nice community and therefore will not attend the best schools. Children born into poverty statistically have lower self-esteem, are less likely to excel in school or are more likely to drop out, and they are more susceptible to violence and crime (Bronfenbrenner Morris, 2007, p. 793). On the other hand if they are born into a family that has a high socioeconomic status they will get anything they want. They will go to the best schools. They will get to go on vacations. They will have the best school supplies. They may have a computer for home and then one at school as well. A parents job also affects a child indirectly. If the childs parents do not make a lot of money and they have to work two jobs their childs socialization will be effected. The parent will not be home to help the child do their homework, play games with them, fix dinner for them, or just to talk to them. The parent also may travel a lot for work or stay overnight for a job. In this case their child is placed in non-parental child care. There are different types of non-parental child care. There are child care centers, family day cares, and in-home care. The different types of non-parental child care can affect the child differently. Where the child is cared for is different. Some are cared for in the childrens home but other times the child is taken to a center. The THE FOUR BASIC STRUCTURES accreditation of the care takers is different. That is, if the care taker is accredited at all. Each type of care also has different learning programs. Some programs have structured activities set up for the children while others basically let the children do whatever they want. Being in child care can be beneficial and detrimental to children. The child will be able to socialize with peers more easily, but they tend to be less cooperative and unresponsive with adults (Berns, 2013, p.156). The last system involved is the macrosystem. The macrosystem consists of the society and subculture to which the developing person belongs, with particular reference to the belief systems, lifestyles, patterns of social interaction, and life changes (Berns, 2013, p.22). There are many examples of macrosystems. Republican, upper class, lower class, Baptist, and Asian ancestry are all examples of macrosystems. The macrosystems we live in influence what, how when, and where we carry out our relations(Swick Williams, 2006, p. 377). This system effects the development of a child in a larger context. The beliefs of the family and their lifestyle, education, religion, and mass media all influence a childs development. Macrosystem influences come from cultural views in society. There are certain roles in society that people are expected to live by. For example, gender roles are still seen strongly in the American culture. Parents may expect a boy to be tough and to never cry, while parents expect girls to be domesticated and nurturers. Family values are huge influences on children. There are many values parents impose on their children. They may expect their children to go to college, get a career, get married, and have 2.5 children. All of this should be done in that exact order. Many familys morals and THE FOUR BASIC STRUCTURES values come from their socioeconomic status, their culture influences, and their religious influences. There are some universal parenting goals that are the same no matter what type of cultural or religious beliefs affect them. These are ensuring physical health and survival, developing behavioral capacities for economic self-maintenance, and instilling behavioral capacities for maximizing cultural values, such as morality, prestige, and achievement (Berns, 2013, p. 210). Even so, for the most part, parenting styles in the United States can vary greatly. Urie Bronfenbrenner was correct in his theory of the bioecological model of human development. There is an enormous amount of data that shows how the four systems influence a child. The microsystem can be seen as the major system of influence. It is important to have healthy, safe, positive relationships. These relationships will help the childs development as the other systems come into their lives. A mesosystem can be described as the links in the chain(Welzel Inglehart, 2010, p. 52). School and family individually influence a child and together they make so much more of an impact. This does not only consist of these two relationships, but all relationships in the microsystem. The indirect effects of the exosystem, such as parents careers, have their own influences. Long hours at work and little pay can lead to a child missing out on necessities needed for life but more importantly, the child will miss out on early socialization with someone he trusts. Finally, the macrosystem is the combination of culture, religion, mass media, and other influences that are widespread. Seamus Heaney's Poems Heaney was born on April 13 1939. He was the eldest of nine children. In modern day society it is common to have 2 or 3 children, and to have eight or nine children is considered very unusual. Heaney lived on the family farm, Mossbawn, about thirty miles northwest of Belfast, in County Derry. The majority of UK residents live in urban areas, and a small minority live in rural areas. It used to be more popular in the past to live in a rural area. People in rural areas live, and have lived, in a totally different culture to that of the people in urban, industrialized areas. Heaney is Irish, which is also another culture to that of the English, today. The conflict in Northern Ireland is almost always a backdrop to his work, stated or implicit. Heaney's Poems are based on real life experiences, which can be related to in only so many ways, because of the differences in lifestyle, culture etc. For example in 'Blackberry Picking', he is talking of picking berries as a boy, and then hoarding them until they rot. This may imply that he went berry picking just for the fun of it, but today it is unusual for children to go berry picking, let alone without an adult. The adult would have known to store the berries properly, but in Heaney's day berry picking was a ritual for children only. To my knowledge, the majority of Heaney's poems were written/ published between 1960 and 1990, though many of the poems refer to his childhood in the 1940's. Therefore, even though he is writing from a child's perspective, he has the understanding of an adult. He is also able to recall events in more detail. Many of the poems I have read are about his parents or major events in his childhood, e.g. 'Foll... ...e poems are written specifically about his childhood, and the third one links in. They tell of his loss of innocence, 'The Early Purges' tells us of his loss of sentimentality, loss of idealism as he grows up 'bloody pups', 'Blackberry Picking' tells us of his loss of optimism and idealism ' each year I hoped knew they would not' 'The past is another country and they do things differently there' This is a very true phrase. Heaney's has a very different past from us. Therefore, his poems even though some have been written fairly recently, can only be related to in context. People living an urban life and childhood, would have very different views on life and death, than Heaney does in his poems. The past is certainly another country, they didn't have the technology that we have today. And foreign countries also have different ways of living than we do.

Introduction History and Its Influence on British 17th century literature By regarding British' literary works up to the 17th century, one can recognize many parallels to the history and culture of that time. In my following term paper I am though going to Investigate where the parallels between history, culture and literature are. I will do so by using chosen passages from British literary texts from the Renaissance and Restoration Literature. Therefore I will first define the characteristics of both epochs.Secondly I will compare the plots of the chosen assuages to the historical and cultural context and accentuate the similarities. As I believe, these similarities between literatures, cultural and historical context can be found in any literary work. 3. Renaissance Literature The term Renaissance as an epoch describes the translation from medieval times to the modern ages which took place between 1485 and 1603 In England. It meaner the rebirth of ancient values and ideals in pa inting, architecture, science, philosophy and literature.Due to the invention of the printing press by Gutenberg, which was established in England by the help of William Cotton in 1474, authors got the chance o write in vernacular language. Since there were from then on more people who could read and understand the texts, Renaissance knowledge was accessible for the folks (CB. League) The early Renaissance in England has strongly been influenced from Italy where it begun about 200 years earlier and from the medieval concept of courtly love.Courtly love meant the poetry by errant knights, often a king's third son who traveled around the countryside to get a place to work. The only chance for those errant knights to gain their social status back was to get a rich lord's daughter, so any minnesinger poems were written by them. The major contents of those poems were the beauty and elusiveness of the lady. Bartholomew Griffin's Fiddles for example contents all the characteristics of Renaissance poetry as one can see In the following excerpt (Sonnet 39): My Lady's hair is threads of beaten gold; Her front the purest crystal eye hath seen: Her eyes the brightest stars the heavens hold; Her cheeks, red roses, such as sell have been.Her pretty lips, of red vermilion dye; Her hand of ivory, the purest white; Her breast displays two silver fountains bright. The spheres, her voice; her grace, the Graces three; Her body is the saint that I adore; Her smiles and favors sweet as honey be. But ah, the worst and last is yet behind: For of a griffin she doth bear the mind ! In this poem, the â€Å"Blazon†, the description of the Lady beauty from head to toe is accentuated. In this poem one can also recognize the concept of kilowatts, which meaner that an outer beauty meaner a good soul, while an ugly appearance is accompanied to a bad soul.That concept is another typical characteristic for the English renaissance literature and one can find it in this poem since there is no description of the lady behavior but her outer appearance. 4. Restoration Literature The literary epoch of the Restoration lasted from 1660 until 1688/89. The most common forms of Restoration literature were satires to criticism the noble and religious texts in prose or verse. It triggered â€Å"the official break in literary culture caused by censorship and radically moralist standards under Cromwell Puritan regime† (CB.English literature). One example for a religious text is â€Å"Paradise lost†, by John Milton. Paradi se lost is an epic poem often books, written in blank verse from 1640 until 1642. Milton transfers Greek epic to a biblical context, though Paradise Lost contains the plot of the first pages of Genesis, how Adam and Eve were created ND how they lost Paradise, â€Å"expanded into a very long, detailed, narrative poem. † (New Arts Library). Paradise lost can be interpreted in two possible ways but not both at the same time.The first possibility is to interpret it as a rewrite of the Bible â€Å"as it might have been written with the benefit of a humanist English education† (Alexander 148). The other possibility is to interpret it in political context as a critique on the upcoming civil war and â€Å"The Eleven Years Tyranny' by Charles I who reigned without parliament for eleven years after his father, James I died in 625. One Example of a satire is â€Å"A Satyr on Charles II†, by John Willow, Earl of Rochester, which was delivered to the King by accident instea d of one the King had actually ordered. CB. Lynch) The Satyr is written in verse and consists of three stanzas. In the first stanza, Charles II is described as a King who lacks ambition â€Å"Him no ambition moves to get renown† but still reigns better than Louis XIV â€Å"Like the French fool that wanders up and down starving his people† and that he is good for England. The second stanza describes Charles Sis's genitals â€Å"His scepter and his prick re of a length† and that he lets his penis reign â€Å"thy prick will govern thee†, which meaner that he takes his mistresses as political consultants.The last stanza says that if Charles Sis's sexual power would decline, his political power would decline as well, because of the political power of his mistresses and in the last two lines Rochester says that he hates all monarchs â€Å"All monarchs I hate, and the thrones they sit on†. 5. Conclusion By regarding any literary text from epochs up to the 17th century, one can always find parallels to cultural or historical terms. This is obvious since the authors would not often more than one possibility to interpret literary works and sometimes it is also difficult to understand how the epoch's literary features developed.Considering Renaissance literature, it is not easy to say today, why the woman's role in those times was that high. It is obvious, that poets tried to improve their social status by winning a noble man's daughter by writing blazon poems about her. Another reason for the women's high position could still be worship of the Virgin Mary or Queen Elizabeth in those times. By regarding the Blazon, one also has the question of the chicken and the egg, since we only know that Queen Elizabeth was always described and painted in the ideal of beauty in the early Renaissance England.What we do not know is whether that ideal of beauty was formed because of her sight or whether she was only described and painted in a way to fu lfill the ideal. In reflection on paradise lost, one either has the opportunity to interpret it on historical grounds or on humanist religious base. Both ways are connected to history or culture, so that in paradise lost, one definitely has literature which leads to one of the two contexts. The satires of Restoration literature are almost all critiques on those time's politics, so that the connection to history is obvious.All three examples for literary epochs that I have chosen have a relative to history or culture, but since we do not always know the development of culture or literary features, we cannot know how it is actually related. There also is the fact, that these are only three examples of thousands of literary works, though it is far too less to prove a general tendency. As a conclusion I can so only make out that every literary work must contain at least some cultural features, since every human being and so very author is influenced by it. 6. The passage Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden brings us behind the eyes of a man in the battle of Vimy Ridge, World War 1.The nature of world war 1 is about using long range guns, resources, unexpected attacks, heavy artillery and of course the mood of this battle was melancholy, bitter and nerve-racking. Resources, unexpected attacks and heavy artillery all link together in a way, and these tactics deemed worthy in this battle. Both lines would have some of their forces using scopes to hit the enemy from afar. They would use objects, sheets and in the story cement statues to hide themselves while shooting at the enemy lines.The war was a game of chess, who could make the right move at the right time and perfectly forsee the enemies attack. In this story the Canadia ns charged with the Artillery Barrage and managed to get up close and personal to the Germans. The Germans, not used to the close combat when the Canadian forces ran to them reacted in the way the Canadians wanted, akwardly. For the first time, the faces of the Hun look nervous. The canadians are so close now that the rifle fire is almost useless, and the ones just ahead of me are on the German sandbags, stabbing their rifles at the men below them. (Boyden 238)The feelings melancholy, bitter and nerve-racking were expressed through the main character who was always scared of friendly artillery shooting up him, he was also always spectating his friends dying or dissapearing and generally had a negative experience with the war. When he goes to the charge he sees many of his friends die, and this sets negative tones and moods, it also courses adrenaline through the soldiers veins. Gilberto sees me too, and turns toward me offering his hand to help me up, an expression on his face as if hes finally found his long lost-friend. I reach up to take it, just as the smile on his face blooms into a red flower. (Boyden 236) So yes, the nature of world war 1 was not of flowers, or smiles but of gruesome outright bloodshed. It wasnt a organized fight where each line would stand on either side of a farmers field and shoot, it was about soldiers using advanced tactics to unexpectedly destroy the enemy in a heartbeat. This was a war of brutality.

Here are a few examples, with discussion and revisions. 1. â€Å"The substance starts off in a higher energy state, and by combining with oxygen, ends up in a lower energy state.† Remove the optional parenthetical phrase â€Å"and by combining with oxygen,† and the resulting grammatically flawed sentence is â€Å"The substance starts off in a higher energy state ends up in a lower energy state.† The conjunction and must precede the first comma to produce the valid construction â€Å"The substance starts off in a higher energy state and ends up in a lower energy state†; therefore, the correctly punctuated revision is â€Å"The substance starts off in a higher energy state and, by combining with oxygen, ends up in a lower energy state.† If the original sentence read, â€Å"The substance starts off in a higher energy state, and when it combines with oxygen, it ends up in a lower energy state,† it would be correct. Here, and begins an independent clause (â€Å"and when it combines with oxygen, it ends up in a lower energy state†) rather than preceding a parenthetical phrase (â€Å"by combining with oxygen†) that is followed by a resumption of the main clause (â€Å"ends up in a lower energy state†). 2. â€Å"Then the answer is given in more detail, with a fuller explanation, and where possible, some illuminating and fun trivia.† When the parenthesis is omitted, the sentence that remains is â€Å"Then the answer is given in more detail, with a fuller explanation, some illuminating and fun trivia.† As in the previous example, the conjunction and is incorrectly thrown out with the rest of the phrase. (This construction also makes â€Å"with a fuller explanation† look like a parenthesis, too, rather than the beginning of a dependent clause.) An individual should not have the power to make a decision without contacting other members of the organization as well as stockholders and Board of Directors. A commitment to human rights has become a major focus in the 21st century, with multinational companies (MNCs) attempting to generate an ethical approach theory inside and outside the organization (Ethical Issues n.d.). Even though so far there are no globally accepted legal or ethical standards for business operations and activities, certain human rights must be considered regardless of cultural standards (Schaffer 2006, 44). According to Schaffer, conomic aspects of globalization must also include social and ethical dimensions(64). There is, therefore, a growing link between social responsibility and profitability, and in MNCs, decisions should not be made based on the understanding of one person. In the case study under discussion, it appears that the HR Director made his own arbitrary decision not to interview Keith. Ethical Issues When two sets of standards exist, it is sometimes unethical to apply the lesser set. International companies are faced with ethical choices that do not exist in a national company in which ethics follow the policy of the country in which it is located. Some third-world companies, for instance, have lower standards than the United States. If the lower standards harm people or environment, it would be unethical for MNCs to use lesser standards. Bad ethical practices are more apparent in today's global economy (Schaffer 2006). Poetry & Response - Essay Example The third part is the animated segments which is the illustration of the poem itself. I appreciated how the movie was structured. At first I thought that it was just a simple biography of Ginsberg but after watching the movie, I realized it was not a biopic but it actually focused on the poem â€Å"Howl†. I find the film entertaining with its crossing of different time periods and animation techniques. I think the animation is quite traditional but very imaginative. I am impressed with the contrast presented by the monochrome flashbacks as against the colorful courtroom scenes. I admired the interesting courtroom scenes especially since I learned that the dialogue used was derived from the actual courtroom transcripts. That is important to me because I know that the movie was faithful to facts. However, I think that the courtroom scenes would have been more meaningful if Ginsberg was present Bravo to James Franco’s portrayal of the young Ginsberg which fits him to a â€Å"T†. I consider his performance as outstanding and convincing. I appreciate Franco’s intonation and inflection since it was an accurate depiction of Ginsberg’s way of speaking. Kudos too to Jon Hamm and David Strathairn who played their roles perfectly as warring lawyers. In conclusion, I think that â€Å"Howl† was effective in bringing a radical literary piece to the movies and making it come alive. The performance of the actors contributed much to the boldness and worthiness of this film. The movie’s value is in its innovativeness in interspersing the courtroom drama with the elaborate animation and the rendition of the key moments of Ginsberg’s youth. I would gladly watch this movie again and recommend it to my
